George Whitefield (1714-1770) was born in Gloucester, the son of an innkeeper, and became one of the most famous preachers in the English-speaking world. Along with the Wesleys, he was part of the Oxford “Holy Club”. He was barred from many church pulpits, so he took to preaching in fields and on city commons, often to crowds of thousands. He preached almost daily, in all weathers, often exhausted. He crossed the Atlantic thirteen times and died in Massachusetts.
He spent his life serving Christ and kept his eyes on the rest that He had promised. If you’re weary, take comfort that this rest is yours too, if you belong to Him.
